Happy Holidays from Santarctica

Filed under: — Bill Jirsa @ 11:36 am

For goodness sake! What is the world record for the largest congregation of Santas the furthest from the North Pole? Before I answer that, you first need to know about a girl called Sandwhich. (Where else but sandwichgirl.com?) Then you need to understand about Santarchy. (That’s right, Santarchy.com) Then I can tell you, if you’re not still waiting for Guinness Book confirmation, that I think it’s thirty three and seventy seven. That’s thirty three Santas and elves who joined the Santa Mob on Christmas Eve at McMurdo Station Antarctica, which sits at seventy seven degrees south, a damn long way from the North Pole.

Read this from Santarchy.com:

“Every December, for the last 12 years, Cacophonous Santas have been visiting cities around the world and generating a bit of naughty Christmas fun as part of the annual Santacon events. It all started back in 1994 when several dozen Cheap Suit Santas paid a visit to downtown San Francisco for a night of Kringle Kaos. Things have reached Critical Xmas and Santarchy is now a global phenomenon.”

Santarchy at the South PoleNow this: Sandwich, who is from San Francisco and friends with the founders of Santarchy, brought dozens of Santa suits and elf suits to Antarctica. Santarctica was born. This year’s naughty Christmas fun included a raucous game of red rover in derelict junction (elves declared victory, but play was interrupted when a Pax Delta came along–think 24 tons of tundra vehicle–and it was on to the Santa human pyramid). After a photo op at the McMurdo Station sign and a workout in the gym, it was on to dinner, the pub crawl through McMurdo’s three drinking establishments, then a scramble to the summit of Ob Hill.

It was by far the most festive and most populous Santarctica to date. So until next year, Happy Holidays from Santarctica! Ho! Ho! Ho!
